3 Must Try Atlantic Seafood Dishes

Food & Cooking Blog

Areas that are bordered by the Atlantic Ocean offer some of the tastiest seafood dishes you will sample, whether you're in a little bar and grill sitting on a New England coastal town or at a lavish restaurant that overlooks the coast in Spain. Read on and discover some of the most delicious dishes that are endemic to the Atlantic Ocean.

Bisque

Although there are many variations of this dish that do not contain seafood, the original recipe demands it. The original construct calls for two ingredients: the first being a crustacean, whether it is lobster, shrimp, crab, or crayfish, and the second is a creamy puree made from fruits, vegetables, or even mushrooms. This dish is a favorite in New England, but its origin is actually from France. Some chefs will use rice to thicken up the dish, while other prefer the purity of a thinner bisque. To really get into the spirit of the bisque experience, eat the dish from a two handed mug, as per tradition.

Arros Negre

Although the Pacific Ocean is said to be home of the best squid dishes, arros negre (which directly translates to "black rice") is one of the most scrumptious, albeit strangest looking, squid dishes to exist – and it hails from the Atlantic. If you find yourself in the Catalan region of Spain, look for this dish. It consists of a bed of white rice, greene cubanelle colors, olive oil, garlic, sweet paprika, and a bit of seafood broth. Then, cooked squid is placed atop the dish. This would be a very colorful dish if it weren't for the fact that the squid's ink is squirted throughout, giving rise to its name. Often, this dish is served with a wedge of lemon, which can be squeezed to flavor the dish, according to the diner's palate.

New England Clam Chowder

No list of the best Atlantic seafood dishes is complete without New England clam chowder. This is one of the heartiest, richest, and absolutely delicious seafood dishes available. The base consists of cream and milk, with just the faintest hint of butter, giving the dish its characteristic richness. Then, the element of heartiness is added: the clams and diced potatoes. Although there are plenty of variations of this dish on the American East Coast that almost get it right – like Rhode Island clam chowder or Manhattan clam chowder – nothing beats kicking back with a warm bowl of New England clam chowder on a cold Massachusetts day.
