How To Turn Gourmet Caramel Candies Into Dessert Pizza

Food & Cooking Blog

You have a ton of caramel candies laying around your house and you want to do something truly special with them. Why not make a dessert pizza? This simple recipe can be finished in less than afternoon and will create a dessert just about anyone will love.

Melting The Candies

The first step in this process is to understand how to melt caramel candies to create a liquid coating. Thankfully, this step is relatively easy and includes only a few minor sub-steps:

  • Coat a cooking pan with salted butter to prevent sticking
  • Heat the butter and place your caramel candies into the pot two cups at a time
  • Let the caramels melt while you stir them slowly
  • Add milk or cream as you stir to add a little extra flavor

Once melted, the caramel must be spooned out fairly quickly before it firms up again. As a result, it's a good idea to have your crust prepared before melting your caramels.

Creating Your Crust

If you don't feel comfortable baking your own pizza crust, pre-made crusts can work. If you decide on that route, you can skip this step entirely. However, if you want to make your own crust from scratch, you can follow this simple recipe:

  • Combine a package of yeast and a teaspoon of sugar in a bowl with warm water
  • Add two cups of flour, a teaspoon of salt, and two teaspoons of olive oil
  • Mix these ingredients together until it thickens to a dough
  • Shape the dough into a crust on a surface coated with flour
  • Add any extra flavorings you want to make the crust more delicious (including bits of chocolate, as this will be a dessert pizza)

Once you've finished, you need to cook the crust for about 20 minutes on 450 degrees in a stove. Now it's time to finish your dessert pizza.

Bringing Everything Together

Once you've baked your crust and melted your caramel, it's time to bring it all together. Spoon one or two teaspoons on the surface and coat it evenly, avoiding large bumps or valleys. Now, you can add coated candies along the surface of the bar, spreading them as evenly as possible.

Wrap your decorated pizza with plastic wrap and then place in the refrigerator on an appropriate pan and let it chill for a few hours. Once it is finished chilling, you can serve it as a delicious snack. It works well for just about any occasion, but is particularly nice for an after school treat.

Alter this recipe anyway you see fit, including adding toffee and other flavorings to your caramel mix. This dessert pizza will be fairly rich in flavor and high in sugar, so make sure to limit intake to one slice or so.
